About the book
The Third Battle of Winchester (also known as the Battle of Opequon) was fought between the Union Army of the Shenandoah, commanded by Major General Philip Sheridan, and the Confederate Army of the Valley, commanded by Lieutenant General Jubal Early.
This book is exhaustively researched, derived from both primary and secondary sources. These sources were found in over 40 different archives and museums. With over 2,000 endnotes, this book allows the reader to become a full participant in the events which unfolded in the fall of 1864.
While recounting events in minute detail, this book is very different from most historical tomes. With a focus on personal stories of both famous and unknown figures, this book is more of a human story than the vast majority of books on military history.
The cast of characters includes:
-
A former Vice President of the United States
-
Two future Presidents of the United States
-
The grandfather of a World War Two hero
-
A future Governor
-
Two future Army Chiefs of Staff
-
And the most famous Indian fighter in American history who would be killed with all of his men at the Little Bighorn.
While a work of non-fiction history down to minute detail, this book is organized to read like a chronological work of literature following the characters from the beginning of their story arc to their end. There are other books on the Shenandoah Valley campaign, however none of them delve into the personal stories of the participants.
